As a parent, I often find myself amazed by my 9-year-old daughter’s fearless approach to life. Recently, she expressed a desire to join the school chorus, participate in the band, run around the soccer field and dive into every extracurricular activity available to her. This enthusiasm got me thinking: when did we lose that adventurous spirit as adults? Why do we shy away from new experiences? As a therapist, I see valuable lessons we can extract from our children about embracing the unknown.

Children are driven by curiosity and eagerness to explore. My daughter’s excitement about joining in on school activities and sports highlights this perfectly. She sees these activities as chances to learn, grow, and have fun. There are no worries about failing or being judged; instead, there’s an openness to new possibilities.
Children engage better when they feel safe to try things—a significant contrast to adults. According to the APA, only 30% of adults feel comfortable trying new things compared to 75% of children. What if we could reignite that childlike wonder in our own lives? How would our mindset change if we approached new experiences with the same excitement as my 9 year old?
The Hesitation of Adulthood
As we grow, caution often replaces recklessness. We start weighing the pros and cons before we jump. Factors like past disappointments, fear of judgment, and societal pressures can trap us in a cycle of inaction. For example, I found myself stuck in a job I no longer felt passionate about but feared the "what ifs" of taking a leap to something new. This delayed me from seizing opportunities and taking that first step into what I now love to do as a therapist. Reflecting on my daughter’s joy at facing the unknown, I realize how much fear governs my own choices. Adults often feel too anxious to embrace unfamiliar activities. Overcoming such hesitations can propel you forward into exciting opportunities, new adventures, budding relationships and towards personal growth.
Embracing New Experiences
So how can we reclaim that adventurous spirit? Here are a few effective strategies that draw inspiration from the fearless attitude of children:
Start Small
You don't need to dive headfirst into new experiences immediately. Begin with manageable steps. If you've always wanted to learn a musical instrument, consider taking just a couple of online lessons to see how it feels. If you're interested in art, dedicate a weekend to painting or drawing—just enough to spark your interest without overwhelming pressure.
Shift Your Mindset
Rather than worrying about potential failures, approach new experiences as growth opportunities. Individuals who embrace mistakes as learning moments are more likely to succeed in their pursuits. Remind yourself that every experience, whether it turns out well or not, provides valuable lessons.
Surround Yourself with Support
Encouragement from friends and family can significantly boost confidence. Share your goals with them, and invite them to join you in trying something new. Having a social support network increases the likelihood of sticking with new activities.
Reflect on Your Experiences
After trying something new, take a moment to think about the experience. What did you learn? What emotions did it stir in you? Journaling your reflections can reinforce positive aspects and motivate you to step outside of your comfort zone again.

The Role of Therapy in Rediscovering Adventure
In my role as a therapist, I often assist clients grappling with anxiety and fear of the unknown. A key component to the therapy I provide is helping individuals face their fears and embrace new experiences. Therapy can provide a supportive environment to uncover the roots of hesitation and equip you with tools to manage anxiety effectively.
Addressing these underlying issues is essential. Many people find that once they start working through their fears, they feel empowered to move forward. This support can dramatically shift perspectives, allowing individuals to reclaim their adventurous spirit.
A Journey of Rediscovery
Watching my daughter approach new endeavors with such joy serves as a powerful reminder of how vital it is to embrace life’s adventures. Many adults forget the thrill that stems from exploring the unknown. By taking small steps, shifting our mindset, leaning on our support systems, and reflecting on our experiences, we can reignite that adventurous spirit within us.
Let’s not let fear trap us any longer. Instead, let’s learn from our children and embrace life’s opportunities with the same excitement and curiosity they embody. Life is too short to shy away from the incredible experiences waiting just outside our comfort zones.

In the end, it’s all about finding joy in the journey and learning from each new experience. So, take a deep breath, channel your inner child, and jump into the adventures that await. What amazing discoveries lie just ahead?
